Shanthala

The University of Oregon’s Word Music Series is pleased to present a concert of South Indian Classical Carnatic Music, with accompanying workshops, featuring flutist Shantala Subramanyam with violinist Avaneeswaram SR Vinu and mridangam (percussion) artist Palghat Mahesh.

Born in Bangalore and raised in Chennai, the heartland of Carnatic music, Shantala Subramanyam began playing in early childhood under the tutelage of her father MN Subramanyam, himself an amateur musician; and her brother, an eminent flute artist.  Subramanyam’s playing has been praised for its melodic presentations combined with complex rhythmic patterns.  Subramanyam has graced many prestigious venues across India and has toured with her group for performances extensively in the U.S., Europe, and Malaysia.  She has given master classes in Carnatic music and rhythms at many universities.  Subramanyam has two albums to her credit, “Bamboo in Harmony” and “Dakshin.”
