“Don’t Mess with the Fairies”

Listen to Martha Bayless discuss fairies in an episode of the podcast Imaginary Worlds. Imaginary Worlds is a bi-weekly podcast about sci-fi and other fantasy genres hosted by Eric Molinsky.

Forget Tinkerbell or those Victorian illustrations of spritely pixies with wings. Authentic fairy folklore is much darker and weirder. Irish storytellers Philip Byrne, Helena Byrne, Eddie Lenihan, and professor Martha Bayless discuss how fairy folklore dominated Celtic culture for centuries, and why belief in fairies is not an unreasonable way of understanding the world.

From Folklore to Folklorist: An Archives for Everyone

The exhibit has been refreshed for the Winter term to display more of the multidisciplinary items found in the Archives.

Fall and Winter 2018/2019
Knight Library, University of Oregon

We invite you to visit this wonderful exhibit created by Randall V. Mills Archives of Northwest Folklore graduate student archivists. The exhibit opens September 28, 2018 and will be available for viewing through winter term, 2019.

The Randall V. Mills Archives of Northwest Folklore is a repository of fieldwork collections and research materials on folklife in Oregon, the Pacific Northwest, and beyond. Collections include books and periodicals; student and faculty research papers and fieldwork projects; fieldwork photographs and sound recordings; and documentary videos.

As part of UO Folklore and Public Culture Program, the Archives supports students in the study of folklore and it provides training opportunities in the management of cultural collections. The Archives also makes collections available to the public for study and appreciation. On display in this exhibit are collections that span the last fifty years, showcasing the interdisciplinary approach of the UO’s Folklore students.
